USB Input Device Freezes and Failures

A fair number of people have encountered off and on failures of USB devices in UT.  Essentially, a USB keyboard or mouse quits responding and leaves the player without controls or stuck repeating a command (e.g. The player can't stop firing, or moving forward).  Un-plugging and re-plugging the device will not get UT to recognize it again.  The only way to fix the problem is to quit UT (if the keyboard still responds) or reboot the computer (if it doesn't).  The trouble strikes both users of USB cards and those with integrated USB support.  The iMac seems to be more vulnerable than other setups, but this glitch strikes any number of models and peripheral configurations, especially those using non-Apple USB devices

The repeating key bug was fixed by the Mac UT Patch 436.

For people with USB cards, some of the rest of these headaches can be fixed with a combination of Mac OS 9.0.4, USB Card Support 1.4.1 and Game Sprockets 1.7.3 or above.

If you have native USB support, having the latest Game SProckets and Firmware updates is no promise of a fix, but you can try the following.  They are listed in order of effectiveness, so go down the list until your problems stops recurring:

In Control Panels : Energy Saver, set Sleep to "Never".  The Mac OS seems to be mucking up peripherals after UT or some other games have been running for the amount of time set to put the system to sleep.   e.g.  If you set your system to sleep after 30 minutes, your mouse will sometimes go out after playing UT for 30 minutes.

Disable Virtual Memory.  Don't know why it works, but turing off VM can cut USB failures in half.

Some people have suggested that the problems are RAM related as the glitches usually occur when there is lots of action on the machine, so you can try upping the available RAM for UT in Get Info.

When these problems cropped up in Unreal, running Norton Disk Doctor would make them disappear for a week or two.  In UT, this does not seem to improve the situation, but if you're desperate, give it a try.
