Options and Preferences

All of the following can be changed from Unreal Tournament's pull down menus.  No editing of your .ini files is required (unless you like doing things the hard way).

Mouse Sensitivity
(UT Menu Options:Preferences:Input)
Experiment with mouse sensitivity.  The default setting is 3 which is waaayy too low.  You will have more refined control of mouse movements the higher this number is set.  Try it at 5 and above until you are comfortable.  It should be set so you can do a 180 degree turn in the air with a quick flip of the wrist.

Weapon Flash
(UT Menu Options:Preferences:Game)
Turn this off.  The flash tends to obscure large parts of the screen.  You can maintain a more accurate aim without it.

Dodging
(UT Menu Options:Preferences:Game)
Make sure this is enabled.  This will allow you to dodge left and right with quick double-taps of the respective command keys.  Double-tapping forward will cause you to do a somersault.  Not entirely useful, but you'll look really cool flipping down stairs or off platforms.

Heads Up Display
(UT Menu Options:Preferences:HUD)
Size the Heads Up Display down.  The default HUD setting covers quite a bit of the screen.  Size it down as far as you can go and still be comfortable with reading it.  Turn off HUD elements that you are not using.  Some hardcore DM players will even turn off the message screen, though I would not recommend it.

Some people have also recorded framerate increases with the HUD off.   If you are desperate for a performance increase, give it a shot.

Crosshair Style
(UT Menu Options:Preferences:HUD)
You wouldn't think that the shape of your crosshiar would matter that much, but sometimes it can obscure your target to the point where you are not sure where you are aiming.  SInce head shots cause considerably more damage than body shots, precision can be important.  Try various crosshiars until you find the one that allows you the most accurate aim.  Switching to the single dot worked wonders for me.

Getting UT to Recognize Multi-Button Mice and Wheels
(UT Menu Options:Input Device)
While you can bind all of your mouse buttons there, you may have noticed that UT will not allow you to bind commands to your mouse wheel in the Options:Preferences:Commands screen.  To do this, you will need to go to the Options:Input Device window.  There, in the upper right corner, you will see button with pull down menus that will allow you to bind a number of different actions to your wheel, the most popular being Next Weapon and Previous Weapon.

If UT still does not recognize all of the buttons and wheels on your mouse, make sure you have the latest version of Game Sprockets (currently 1.7.4) which you can pick up at Apple's site.

If after that, if you still have problems, (especially if it is a Logitech mouse utilizing Mouseware) you may need to install USB Overdrive, a $15 shareware control panel, and disable any proprietary control panel that your mouse came with.

Binding Voice Commands and Messages
(UT Menu Options:Preferences:Input)
In this window, by hitting the "Voice Binder" button, you can activate voice messages by hitting a single key.  Using this feature is essential to successful team play.  While trying to decide which of over 40 messages to bind to a finite number of keys (I've heard PC players say that UT would only let them bind 6 messages; I've got 8 bound and have room for more), be sure not to overlook the following:

"Incoming!" - To let your team know that hostile company is heading their way.

"Roger that"/"Got it" etc. - Something that gives a quick affirmative to orders sent to you.

"Enemy Flag Carrier is Here" - You've sought and found. Now let your teammates know where to come and destroy.

"I'm Under Heavy Attack" - Only use this if you are the flag carrier and need assistance.
