How To Configure the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer for UT
This wonderful information was posted by Valen on the c.s.m.g.a newsgroup. Due to the high volume of emails I receive regarding this issue, I have decided to post his instructions here for mass consumption!
Valen's Method
After a lot of reading in this newsgroup and lots of experimentation with my "USER.INI" file I have finally figured out how to fully configure all the button on my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer mouse for UnrealTournament.
Although this may be common knowledge to many I am posting this to help anyone who is also struggling with this problem.
HOW TO DO IT
1) Use the Extension Manager to turn off all the 3 Intellimouse Extensions and the Intellipoint control panel. This will allow you to use the Input Sprockets features. Make sure you have the latest Input Sprockets (1.7.3 I think).
2) go to the OPTIONS---Input Device Tab This should now show you all 5 buttons including the Mousewheel UP and Down options. Once I got this I thought sweet now I can configure all the buttons but I was wrong. First, the configurable actions for each of the buttons was pretty limited (NEXT Inventory... who uses this????). Secondly, other than the Mousewheel usually wouldn't work.
3) Go to your "USER.INI" file
4) I figure out that the USER.INI file seems to take precedence over the Input Sprockets settings. Most importantly, however, is that each action available in the Input Sprocket menu (i.e. Fire, crouch, next weapon, etc...) has a specific setting in the USER.INI file.
For example,
Button 1 on most (all?) mice defaults to the "Fire" action and this action is determined by the "Joy 1" setting in the USER.INI file. More importantly however, the INPUT SPROCKET setting only determines where the program should look in the USER.INI file for the Command linked to that specific Mouse button. The INPUT SPROCKET setting does NOT determine this command, the command initiated is whatever command is indicated in the USER.INI file.
TO PUT IN PERSPECTIVE
-This setting gives the common fire action when the left button is pressed-
INPUT SPROCKETS: LEFT BUTTON = FIRE/CLICK
USER.INI file: Joy 1 = FIRE
-This setting causes you to jump when pressing the left button-
INPUT SPROCKETS: LEFT BUTTON = FIRE/CLICK
USER.INI FILE: Joy 1 = JUMP
-These settings will still give you the fire command with left button and the ALT FIRE command for the right button despite totally different Input Sprocket settings-
INPUT SPROCKETS: LEFT BUTTON = CROUCH - RIGHT BUTTON = FIRE/CLICK
USER.INI FILE: Joy 1 = ALT FIRE - JOY 4 = FIRE
Input Sprockets commands and the associated USER.INI setting
SETTING = COMMAND/ACTION
Joy1 = FIRE
Joy2 = ALT FIRE
Joy3 = JUMP
Joy4 = CROUCH
Joy5 = PREVIOUS WEAPON
Joy6 = NEXT WEAPON
Joy7 = THROW WEAPON
Joy8 = MOUSE LOOK
Joy9 = PREVIOUS INVENTORY
Joy10 = NEXT INVENTORY
Joy11 = ACTIVATE INVENTORY
Joy12 = WALK
Joy13 = ??
Joy14 = ?? [HAVEN'T FOUND THE COMMANDS SPECIFIC TO THESE SETTINGS]
Joy15 = ??
Joy16 = ??
JoyX = SIDESTEP LEFT
JoyY = SIDESTEP RIGHT
JoyZ = SIDESTEP
JoyR = CENTER VIEW
JoyU = LOOK UP
JoyV = LOOK DOWN
JoyPovRight = TURN RIGHT
JoyPovLeft = TURN LEFT
JoyPovUp = RUN FORWARD
JoyPovDown = RUN BACKWARD
MouseWheelDown = PrevWeapon
MouseWheelUp = NextWeapon
*REMEMBER, you can put ANY command in the USER.INI setting, the INPUT SPROCKET command/action only determine which "Joy" position to look**

And from one of our readers comes additional info regarding the Microsoft Intellimouse:
The way i did it : DO NOT deactivate any control panels or extensions which came with IntelliMouse.
Open the control panel IntelliPoint 1.0 and choose "add new setting". browse your HD and choose the UnrealTornamentApp. Then CHECK THE BOX "deactivate IntelliPoint for this App".
Now you can switch back on the tab menu to global settings. Run your UTApp and choose "Input Device" from the UTDesktop menu. change the input device to intellimouse (it says only USBMouse - the other one is USB Apple Mouse).
That´s it. It works on my machine without causing any problems. With this solution you don´t have to restart your system for playing UT-TheBestOfAllKillingGames, and you don´t have to modify your user.ini . You can configure your mouse settings under UTDesktop "Input device". Check it out!

(EdNote: With this method, you can only assign keys which input sprockets supports...while with the other method you can assign anything you want...you choose what will work best for you.)
