[2] Mac UT Unofficial FAQ
=========================================================

[2.1]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What is the latest patch available for Mac Unreal Tournament?

A: 436 is the current latest code. The 436 patch broke compatibility
with previous patches, so if you want to play online you must have
the 436 patch installed. Currently all versions of UT have the 436
patch available for it.

[2.2]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I disable the City intro map?

A: Open your UnrealTournament.ini. with a text editor. (I recommend
TexEdit Plus or BBEdit Lite) Search for the line LocalMap=CityIntro.unr
change it to LocalMap=UT-Logo-Map.unr and save the changes.
When you start up from this point on, you will be greeted by the
Unreal Logo screen bypassing the opening movie sequence altogether.

[2.3]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How can I show my frame rate?

A: In the console (press the Tilde key or the TAB key) type in
"timedemo 1" and press Enter. A counter will display you current
and average frame rate. Repeat the process but enter in
"timedemo 0" to remove the counter.

[2.4]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I take a screenshot?

A: By default you can press the F9 key to take a screenshot.
The screen capture is saved in the Unreal Tournament
folder as a PICT file and is named unrealtournamentpict00x,
where x is a number from 0 - 9. These numbers are determined
based on how many shots you currently have taken. You can
however, take more than just 10 screenshots, the numbers will
continue upwards. i.e. 010, 011, 012, etc. Also, if you are
using the Glide version of UT, the names look like this:
Unreal 3dfx Pict xxxx where xxxx is a number from 0001 to 9999.

[2.5]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I do those flips I see others doing in the game?

A: This is an animation viewed by others when you dodge.
(Quickly tap the movement keys twice). This doesn't affect your
view however during the animation.

[2.6]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: Do I need the CD in the computer to play the game?

A: If you are playing with a version of UT prior to the 436 patch, YES.
After you install the 436 patch, the CD check is no longer used.
i.e. you can play without the CD in the game. You must do a FULL install
of the game in order to not play with the CD however.

[2.7]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How can I access the Robot skin?

A: That's the Xan skin, he's the boss at the end of the game.
You may access his skin in 2 ways.

1. Beat him on the final level, or
2. Open your User.ini, add these lines at the bottom.

[Botpack.Ladder]
HasBeatenGame=True

Ensure there is an empty line before you add in the 2 lines.
Save the changes and start Unreal Tournament.
You may now select the Xan skin from the multiplayer menu.

[2.8]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How can I access the Advanced options menu?

A: To gain access to the Advanced Options menu, press the tab/tilde key,
then type "preferences" and press Enter.

[2.9]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How can I use/install the files stored in the UnrealTournament\Cache directory?

A: The Cache directory is used to store Map, textures, etc.
data which you may have downloaded while playing online.
This data is stored for a certain amount of days, set in your UnrealTournament.ini,
after which it gets deleted. The stuff that is stored in your cache folder
can be seen by opening cache.ini with a text editor.
(I recommend TexEdit Plus, or BBEdit Lite, both EXCELLENT.)

If you wish to install/uninstall these maps/data without any fuss,
then you should use the "Cache Cleaner" feature of the UTilites program,
which will make this procedure simple. However, it is recommended that
you first uncheck the "Other" category in the Cache Cleaner,
since installing "Other" items can cause version mismatches
and other errors. This takes the stress out of having to
rename file extensions & such.

You can find it at http://osx.beyondunreal.com in the Files section.

[2.10]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How come I can't play on the Internet?

A: Most probably you don't have the latest patch installed.
436 as of this writing. If you have the latest patch and still can't play,
see the next section below.

[2.10.1]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What additional downloads do I need?

A: This is particularly of great importance for those who play online,
or are about to. The following downloads are almost necessary for online gaming.
Not installing them can also cause problems.

First off install the latest patch.
(Mac UT 436 patch) http://osx.beyondunreal.com/files.html

Install the following bonus packs:
UT Bonus pack 1.
UT Bonus pack 2.
UT Bonus pack 3.
UT Bonus pack 4.

You can get them all here:
hthttp://www.unrealtournament.com/downloads/

While this is by no means comprehensive, these are official add-ons (updates).
So obviously you'll more than likely join a server using these.

[2.11]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: I downloaded some files, but they have the wrong icons?

A: The type/creator for a UT file is really unimportant,
as the files will work just fine without the proper type/creator.
However, a simple utility exists for changing the type/creator easily.

This is a UT AutoTyper I made:
http://osx.beyondunreal.com/files/ut_autotyper.sit

Just drag and drop your UT file onto the application,
and your type/creator will be set correctly.

[2.12]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What is an aimbot?

A: An aimbot as the name suggests is a utility/hack which makes it
basically impossible to miss your target, i.e. cheating.
Aimbots take the fun out of games and no decent player should use them.
Don't bother playing online if you intend to use an Aimbot,
as most servers are CSHP or UTPure protected.

[2.13]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What is CSHP?

A: CSHP is a UT mod which provides protection against
all sorts of cheats and aimbots.

[2.13.1]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What versions of CSHP are incompatible with Mac UT?

A: There are some older versions of CSHP which are not compatible with Mac UT.
I do not know which specific ones are not,
but the latest builds of CSHP are fully Mac compatible.

[2.13.2]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What is UTPure?

A: UTPure is the next generation of CSHP. It does the same thing as CSHP, but is updated more often and is currently the protection of choice on most online servers.

[2.13.3]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What problems are there with UTPure and the Mac?

A: There are some, IMHO, serious glitches with UTPure that affects Mac users.
Stories of Mac users not being able to connect because of UTPure enabled servers are rampant.
It seems there are problems with the autodownload of some UTPure files on the Mac.

The solution is pretty simple, and effective. You must manually install all versions
of UTPure and remove any old versions from your cache folder (see [2.9]) . You can get all versions of
UTPure in one compressed download made expressely for this purpose. It includes all versions of
UTPure and a simple set of instructions for installing them. (Basically, you move all the files
into your UT/System folder, and a couple of them to your UT/Cache folder.)

You can get the file HERE.

There is also a CSHP version of this solution at the link above which I also recommend
downloading and installing. If you download and install both of those packages,
you will be able to connect to 99.9% of all online servers with no problem.
Many thanks to unrealadmin.org for coming up with this nice package.

[2.14]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do you fire your weapons after the end of a match?

A: Simply hold down the Fire button and change weapons.

[2.15]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I drop a Relic?

A: Relics were added to UT with Bonus Pack 1.
From the console (press Tilde/TAB) and type "mutate TossRelic"
This throws away a relic, so you can pick up another one.
You can bind this command to a key. (see Section 3)

[2.16]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I install a third party map?

A: One of the nice things about UT is that all third party maps
are completely cross-platform. This means that they all work on the mac
with no modification. Just download, unzip, and use.
That being said, there are a couple of things you need to know
in order to install them.

Almost all maps that are downloaded from the Internet have a read me
with instructions, but just in case, here is what you do.
After having unzipped the downloaded map,
move the file ending in ".unr" into the Maps folder of your UT installation.
Fire up UT and the map should show up in the maps list.

Some maps have additional files which also need to be installed...
these could be additional textures, music, sounds, etc.
All of those files also go in specific folders,
and need to be moved there in order for the map to work properly.
Here is a list of the extensions you will encounter, and where to put the files:

Files ending in:
.UNR = Maps Folder
.UTX = Textures Folder
.UAX = Sounds Folder
.UMX = Music Folder
.U = UT System Folder

To uninstall a map, just reverse the process.
Take all the files you moved into the folders, and move them to the trash.

[2.17]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I install a third party mod/mutator?

A: Most mutators and game modifications come in .UMOD format,
for which you need to use the umod Installer supplied with the game
in order to install them.

You can also get a copy of the latest version here:
http://osx.beyondunreal.com/files/umodinstaller1.1.sit

Mutators are selected from the mutator dialog box when
you start up a practice session. Modifications traditionally
include new game types and complete conversions of many
aspects of the game. In essence, they are much more complex than mutators.

In case you happen to download a mutator which is a zip archive
and not in .UMOD format, the instructions for it are very similar
to installing maps. All mutators will have a ".u" file and a ".int" file.
Some complex mutators may have more than one ".u" or ".int" files.
No matter, just put the ".u" and ".int" files in your UT System Folder,
and the mutator should show up in your mutator list.

Some mutators may also include additional texture,
sound and/or music files... just follow the extension grid in
section 2.16 see where those additional files are supposed to go.

[2.18]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: My mod/mutator won't install?

A: Most of the time, this is because the UMOD file was corrupted
somehow during download. UMOD files can be easily corrupted
after download when Stuffit Expander decodes and unzip's them.

Make sure that you have Stuffit Expander set to NEVER convert text
files when decompressing. You need to go into file->preferences
for stuffit expander, then select cross platform from the menu.

Select "CONVERT FILES TO MACINTOSH" and select NEVER.
Close, and save prefs. THEN expand that .zip file.

If it still won't work, try a different decompression utility
designed specifically for ZIP files, like ZipIt, or UnZip.
You can do a search for these at versiontracker.com.
http://www.versiontracker.com

Another tip that was sent in by a reader which worked for them,
is to try installing the UMOD from somewhere else. I quote:

"Sometimes UMOD files refuse to be installed from the main UT directory.
The installer will always complain that it "can't find module (whatever)".
The solution to this is simple: run the UMOD from somewhere else.
I usually find the desktop is a good place."

So there you go. Move the UMOD file to the desktop,
and drag and drop it onto the UMOD installer program.

[2.19]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I un-install a third party mod/mutator?

A: Sure, third party modifications are great, but they add to
loading time and, quite frankly, can be a bit buggy.
Its strange, but very few of them have any information in the
Read Me on how to un-install them when you don't want them around any more.
Those that do, usually only have instructions for un-installing on a PC.
So, once installed, how the heck do you get a mod out of your UT?

First, you have to locate all of the system files associated with the mod.
The easiest way to do this is to open your UT System folder and
find a file installed by the mod. This shouldn't be too hard.
For example, the Infiltration mod installs a bunch of files
that start with "Infil".

Once you have found one of the mod's files, select it,
then sort the folder by date. This will group all of the files
you installed or were created on a specific date, effectively
grouping all of the mod's files together.

Move the files to the Trash.
Move the mod's .ini files from your Unreal Tournament folder to the Trash.

To make this entire process much easier on yourself,
you should download UTilities, which automates the entire process:

You can get it here:
http://osx.beyondunreal.com in the Files section.

[2.20]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I play a demo?

A: Demos need to be stored inside the UT folder.
From the console (type the tilde/tab key to show the console):

demoplay nameofthefilm (DO NOT include the .dem extension)
demoplay nameofthefilm?3rdperson (To view in chase cam mode)
stopdemo (Stops the playback of the demo)

[2.21]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I record a demo?

A: From the console:

demorec nameofthefilm (give it an easy name to remember,
you can change it later from the finder is you wish)

stopdemo (Stops the recording process)

Local demos that you take record your point of view only,
Server-Side demos, which are taken on the server machine
running the game, records all the players point of view,
and are therefore much larger.

[2.22]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: More facts about demos?

A: Demos will only affect your game performance slightly
while you're recording. You can record as long as you want,
limited only by your HD disk space. Demos recorded will always
take the perspective of the person recording them, including
any zooming, etc. they may do. If you play back the demo
in "3rdperson" mode, then you can switch between player views,
but you will see no scoreboard etc. While you are watching a demo,
use the behindview and fov console commands for some interesting views!

[2.23]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: Why won't this demo I've downloaded play?

A: More often than not, it is because the machine it was recorded on
had a file that you are missing installed on it.
Have you got all the bonus packs? See section 2.10.

If you still can't open it, the other likely culprit is CSHP.
The server probably had a version of CSHP you do not have installed.
Here is page which lists every-single CSHP ever made.
You will probably have to install the appropriate one in order to view the demo.
(CSHP2-1130 is the most common one which gives problems)

http://www.midnightinteractive.com/CSHP/CSHPDownloads.htm

[2.24]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: Will Mac UT be ported to OSX?

A: There is no OFFICIAL word on whether Mac UT will be ported to OSX.
Glenda Adams from Westlake Interactive (the folks who ported the game to the Mac)
has stated that porting Mac UT to OSX is not in their contract
and they would not be paid for it. However, she has stated that she has
been working on it, IN HER SPARE TIME, as an exercise on porting to OSX.

What does this mean for you?
There is no OFFICIAL release date,
or even any assurance that it will be done at all.

UPDATE:
As of April 2002, Glenda Adams has released some UNOFFICIAL OS X
versions of Unreal Tournament for the Mac. They are not supported,
buggy, but DO work. Preview 3 is the latest as of April 2002.

http://www.insidemacgames.com/news/story.php?ArticleID=5164

UPDATE:
As of October 2003, an actual [osX] version of UT is in the works by the
programmer who did the Unreal Tournament 2K3 port to the Mac. No
further details are available.

[2.25]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: Where can I get UnrealEd for the Mac?

A: UnrealEd is the official level/map/modification editor
for Unreal Tournament. It is used to make levels (maps),
modifications, voice packages, etc.
UnrealEd ships with the PC version of Unreal Tournament,
and is a PC ONLY application.

UnrealEd is not available for the Macintosh platform,
and there are no current or future plans to make
it available for the Mac, because it would take as much (or more)
work to make it available for the mac as it did to port the game.

The only options are to run UnrealEd in Virtual PC for the Mac (slow and buggy),
or to buy a cheap PC to use it on. The latest version of UnrealEd (UnrealEd2)
is available with the 436 patch for the PC.
You must have the full version of the PC UT game in order to be able to use it.

[2.26]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: Do redirected downloads work on a Mac?

A: Redirected downloads do work, but not compressed redirected downloads.
If you want to redirect downloads to a server other than your UT server,
they must be left uncompressed on your web space.

[2.27]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I connect to the #osx channel in IRC?

A: Point your IRC client to the ProGamePlayer Network, or PGP.
Located at irc.progameplayer.com and /join #osx.

[2.28]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I use more than one button with my multi-button mouse?

A: From Sean Carriedo, our resident multi-button expert:

1) Have the Intellipoint software drivers 1.1
2) Install Game Sprockets 1.7.5 (especially USB HID Driver and HID Library)
3) I am running OS 9.1 so be aware of extension differences
between my system and yours.
4) I am only sure that this works with Intellimouse setups but other
mice may work similarly or you can at least use similar
reasoning to figure your setup out.

The USER.INI file takes precedence over the Input Sprockets settings.
More importantly, each action available in the Input Sprocket menu
(i.e. Fire, crouch, next weapon, etc...)
has a specific setting in the USER.INI file.

For example, Button 1 on most (all?) mice defaults to the "Fire"
action and this action is determined by the "Joy 1" setting in the USER.INI file.
More importantly however, the INPUT SPROCKET setting only determines
where the program should look in the USER.INI file for the Command
linked to that specific Input Sprocket setting. The INPUT SPROCKET
setting does NOT determine this command, the command initiated is
whatever command is indicated in the USER.INI file.

Input Sprockets commands and the associated USER.INI setting

USER INI file Input sprocket setting
Joy1 = FIRE
Joy2 = ALT FIRE
Joy3 = JUMP
Joy4 = CROUCH
Joy5 = PREVIOUS WEAPON
Joy6 = NEXT WEAPON
Joy7 = THROW WEAPON
Joy8 = MOUSE LOOK
Joy9 = PREVIOUS INVENTORY
Joy10 = NEXT INVENTORY
Joy11 = ACTIVATE INVENTORY
Joy12 = WALK
Joy13 = ??
Joy14 = ??
Joy15 = ??
Joy16 = ??
JoyX = SIDESTEP LEFT
JoyY = SIDESTEP RIGHT
JoyZ = SIDESTEP
JoyR = CENTER VIEW
JoyU = LOOK UP
JoyV = LOOK DOWN
JoyPovRight = TURN RIGHT
JoyPovLeft = TURN LEFT
JoyPovUp = RUN FORWARD
JoyPovDown = RUN BACKWARD
MouseWheelDown = PrevWeapon
MouseWheelUp = NextWeapon

-This setting gives the common fire action when the left button is pressed-
INPUT SPROCKETS: LEFT BUTTON = FIRE/CLICK
USER.INI file: Joy 1 = FIRE

-This setting however causes you to jump when pressing the left button is pressed-
INPUT SPROCKETS: LEFT BUTTON = FIRE/CLICK
USER.INI FILE: Joy 1 = JUMP

[2.29]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: Can maps be renamed?

A: Map filenames can be renamed and they will work.
However, if you try to play online or through a LAN with the map,
you will get a version mismatch because you changed the name.
Unless you change the name of the map on the server as well to match yours.

Also, you can change the prefix of the map to make it play as another
game type. Take CTF-Coret, rename it to DM-Coret, and now you can
have a deathmatch in a CTF map. Please take note that changing
a DM map to CTF won't work... as the DM map has no flags
built into it. Changing SOME DM maps to DOM sometimes works,
depends on if the author added control points support.

[2.30]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: Can I listen to MP3's while I'm playing UT?

A: The problem with listening to MP3's while you are playing
UT is that when you play them with Soundjam, iTunes (or any
other MP3 player), it stops after a song ends and won't switch
to the next song. You can minimize UT, switch to the MP3 player
so it switches songs and then the player will go to the next song,
but this kinda defeats the purpose.

The problem with the MP3 player not moving to the next song is that
UT allocates ALL of your Macs system resources to itself, and does
not let any other applications run.

If you go into the UT advanced options window (type 'preferences'
from the console) you will find a setting called "OSTime=".
The default value is 0, giving background tasks no time to execute.
This is why your MP3 player does not load the next song.
If you set OSTime to 1 instead of 0, the songs will load, but there is a
severe performance hit.

Macster, in our forums, did some experimenting with this setting,
and this is what he came up with:

OST Time Amount:

OSTime=1 Slow, Frame Rate verybad, mp3 switches
OSTime=0 Normal, no mp3
OSTime=-1 mouse doesnt work at all
OSTime=-2 mouse doesnt work at all
OSTime=-3 mouse doesnt work at all
OSTime=0.5 mp3 doesnt play after song ends, resets to 0
OSTime=2 Frame Rate not as bad but still laggs, mp3 switches
OSTime=3 Frame Rate not as bad but still laggs, mp3 switches
OSTime=3-90 Frame Rate not as bad but still laggs, mp3 switches
OSTime=100 Excellent Play, little laggish, but not enough
to affect the game play. mp3 switches,
OSTime=199 Excellent Play, no lagg untile the song switches,
where you will get a minor .5 second pause.

So there it is, it seems that the optimal setting for the OSTime=
variable is "199". Set your OSTime to 199, play some MP3's and
see if that doesn't work for you.

[3] Console Commands and Aliases
=========================================================

[3.1]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I access the console in UT?

A: Press the Tilde key (the key to the left of the number 1 key on your keyboard)
for a pop up console, or the TAB key for an in-game console line.

[3.2]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: What are the console commands in UT?

A: Certain advanced functions in UT can only be accessed by
inputing them in the console. Here is list of some of the most
commonly used console commands. Just type these commands into the
console for them to work.

Q: How do I bind keys from the console?

A: To bind keys from the console you must use the following syntax:
SET INPUT <keyname> <binding>

(Examples are bound to the "X" key for demonstration purposes)

SET INPUT X disconnect
SET INPUT X mutate TossRelic
SET INPUT X GetWeapon Translocator

[3.3.1]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I bind keys from the advanced preferences dialog?

A: Go to the Advanced Options window (open the console and type "preferences").

Expand the Advanced menu and click on "Raw Keybindings".
You will see a list of all of the keys that UT recognizes
and the commands and aliases that are currently bound to them.

When you click on a key, a field across from that key becomes active,
allowing you to enter the command or alias you would like that key to activate.

For example: You want a key that will automatically type "gg" after an online game.
Click on the line of the key you would like to use
(note that the keys on the 10-key pad are under NumPad) and type:

"say gg" (no quotes, of course)

To bind an alias to a key, click on the key you would like it bound to
and type the name of the alias (see section 3.5 and 3.5.1 for more about aliases):

"feigntalk"

Q: What are the cheat codes in UT?

A: To enable cheating in Unreal Tournament, you must first type
"IAmTheOne" in the console.

Notice: this was fixed in the 413 patch!
It is no longer necessary to type "IAmTheOne" starting with the 413 patch)

Just type these commands into the console for them to work.

AllAmmo - Sets all picked up weapons ammo count to 999.
Amphibious - Breathe Underwater.
Fly - Fly.
Ghost - Fly/Walk through walls.
God - Makes you invincible. Type again to return to normal mode.
Invisible - You're invisible. Type again to return to normal mode.
KillPawns - Kills every character on a map...good for clearing the bots.
Loaded - Gives you all of the weapons and armor in DeathMatch mode.
PlayersOnly - Freezes all non-player characters.
SetJumpZ - Type a number above 350 to jump higher than normal.
Walk - Resume to normal mode from Fly or Ghost.
Summon - Summon Items. See section 3.4.1 for a list of UT items to summon.

Q: What is an alias?

A: There is a fair amount of confusion surrounding key bindings and aliases.
An alias is essentially a command or string of commands that are
assigned a specific name. Once an alias is created, you can bind it
to a key by citing the aliases name.

Key bindings are the settings that tell UT which commands or aliases
are activated by specific keys.

It will all (hopefully) become clearer as you read on but, essentially,
if a command already exists, you do not need to create an alias
to bind it to a key. If you want a new command or a string of commands
available at the touch of a button, you need to create an alias.

[3.5.1]--------------------------------------------------------- T

Q: How do I create an alias?

A: The first step in creating an alias is to get to the Advanced Options window.
You can do this by opening the console with the Tilde key (~) and typing "preferences".

From here, expand the Advanced menu and click on "Key Aliases".
You will see all of the aliases UT is currently using.
You will have to scroll down to find and line that
currently has no entry and will look like this:

(Command="",Alias=None)

When you click on a vacant line, a field will become active that
will allow you to type. The commands that you want activated by
the alias will go between the quotes. The name of the alias will replace "None".

For Example: You hate being fragged while you type,
so you want to create an alias that allows you to communicate
(more or less) safely in games and save you a key stroke.

Change the alias entry to:

(Command="feigndeath | talk",Alias=feigntalk)

This will allow you to feign death and activate the communication
screen with a single keystroke once "feigntalk" is bound to a key.
(see section 3.3 and 3.3.1)

You can set aliases using any of the console commands. The "|" with
a space before and after it lets you input multiple commands to be
executed by the alias.

You can also open the User.ini file with a text editor, and create
aliases and keybinding that way too. (Preferred method of real
UT geeks.) :)
